Charging Handle Stuck in Charge Port

Most EVs have a safety lock mechanism that prevents the charging cable from being released while a charging session is active. This guide offers troubleshooting steps to release the cable lock. The most common reason for a stuck cable is that the charging session is technically still in progress.

Important Note: The vehicle is what locks the charger handle into place, there is NO locking mechanism on the charger handle itself.

1.) Ensure the session is ended

  • Navigate to your vehicle's charging screen and select the option to end the session.

2.) Press the release button on the top of the charging handle

  • Once you've verified that the session has ended, use the release mechanism on the charging handle itself.

3.) Check Vehicle Locks & Unlock Vehicle Doors

  • If the release button does not work, the vehicle's internal safety lock is likely still engaged.
  • Try unlocking the door, then attempt to remove the cable. Some vehicles require pressing the unlock button 3 or 4 times in row.

If these steps have not helped you, you can attempt a manual release. Please ensure the charging session has ended before attempting.

Manual Release

  • Check your vehicle's owner's manual for a manual unlock option. This may be a menu option for an "unlock" or "release" button located on your vehicle's main charging screen.
  • Your vehicle may also be equipped with a physical handle, lever, or cable (often located in the trunk or near the charge port) that will override the automatic lock.
